Meet Angie, the radiant bride You’re a lucky guy, Dillon! To get ready for  the solemnization party at noon, Angie popped by Texture ( the cool salon right next to The Garden Slug) to have her hair & makeup done up. Glam man!

Any guy that is so sweet to his mum and granny is definitely a keeper. And did we mention that Dillon has a fantastic sense of humor? Looks like Angie got a perfect catch too

Check out these lovely chocolates from Joey and Paul.. Joey celebrated her husband’s birthday at The Garden Slug on Friday night, and we’re so happy that they enjoyed themselves! So now, we must hao-lian a bit. ( Just kidding, we are just humbly sharing our joy!! ).. This is what Joey wrote in her card :

” Dearest Sophia, Joseph, Shaun and the other guys who was helping out last night ( Alex and Kenny)..  Thank You ! I really cannot say this enough. Joey, you know what? Actually Alex slug told me just now that you are one of the nicest customers we’ve ever had too.. He was so touched that at the end of the party, you actually helped the staff to pack up.. You were also so concerned that the staff would have to stay late and they may be exhausted ..  So truly, the pleasure was all ours! Here’s a toast from The Garden Slug to you and Paul, wishing you both lots of health and happiness!

The “I Do”s scribbled all over the welcome board was all Hans slug’s idea… Didn’t know that Hans had such a marshmallow center. Haiyo, must quickly find Hans a gf, so he can whip out some of that repressed mushiness..

Joe + Chris + José (our cute new slug) + myself started work at 430am today.. Unbelievable as it seems, we had 5 events lined up and so we had loads of prep work to do.. I took this picture of our new Christmas tree, as soon as I saw light.. Check out the luscious firs.. It’s REAL …And it smells absolutely divine. If you look closely, you can find pegs with white painted hearts & little green wooden ladybugs. Check out the tri-coloured fussili.. Joe mentioned that we’ll cook them for staff lunch after Xmas, haha. (I hope he’s kidding! :-0 ) 

And look at those oh-so-retro crochet stars! Sharon slug’s mum actually made them by hand, aren’t they absolutely gorgeous?!!

This time of the year, I always start to reminisce.

About how we were crazy enough to set up a 60-seater restaurant on a shoestring budget…

… and how we decided on the name “The Garden Slug” in August 2006…

but we couldn’t afford to hire a graphic designer. So in our usual stubborn, rebellious, bootstrapping spirit… decided to just do it all ourselves.

I marvel at how we survived on a manpower of 4, sometimes 3½.

It didn’t deter us that we weren’t in the heart of Orchard Road, or somewhere more “happening” with heavier foot traffic.
 

We couldn’t afford it anyway.

And I reminisce about our series of firsts.

Our first catering event, ever.

Our first celebrity-endorsed catering event, ever.

Our first namecards with map at the back… which was horribly wrong!

And a year and a half after opening, we installed our first credit card terminal.

For all our struggles, the Powers That Be awarded us with a big, fat “A“.

We could never afford advertising. Not even a quarter page of any publication.

Somehow, we were entrusted with doing bigger and more “artsy” events each time…

Maybe it helped that we were so incredibly charming, witty and irresistibly good-looking…!

We thought we’d be millionaires after two years. We were grossly mistaken, of course. Good looks can only get you so far.
So what have we now, after residing in the quietest corner of the world for two years?

We have you! …and you, and you, and you, … and you!

We have smiles and warmth and laughter and celebrations and furry friends…
 

…and a bunch of diligent, passionate young Slugs.. who travel all the way from Bukit Panjang and Ang Mo Kio to work with us.

We wouldn’t trade this for anything in the world!

OK maybe for a million dollars we’d trade you off in a heartbeat, without blinking too.

Just kidding

We’d do it all over again. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

But we couldn’t have done it without you. And you, and you. And you.
