We got Milk! ( Food Porn ALERT!)

The Garden Slug got invited to a very special event today – The movie premiere of Milk.. The happy folks from Fridae roped us in to sponsor the cocktail for this very meaningful event. Of course we’re more than happy to do our bit in raising funds for Indignation 2009. We had so much fun ! Honestly, I’m not easily star-struck.. but I saw Catherine Lim. Yes, THE Catherine Lim, writer extraordinaire and such an icon…. I wanna look like her when I turn 50!

A special shout out to the fabulous folks who turned up to support this very meaningful event … Wilhem + Dennis + Joseph + HuiMay + Jessie + Faith + April + Sharon + Fiona + Bec + Kelly + Ida. We heart Yous!

Enjoy the Food Porn – don’t get too (s)excited ok? **

( Sharon Slug coined all the sleazy food terms used above… So, morally upright folks, don’t blame me ok? ) :-)

“Bento-ver” – geddit?

A client requested for fancy packed lunches, and instead of our brown bags lunches, we thought it’d be so fun and so visually-exciting to make some fancy Hors d’oeuvre bentos instead. We sourced for the “6-treasure” display boxes used for Chinese New Year goodies and filled them with slug tiny eats instead.. We’re glad that the client was delighted! :-)

“Yes Mr President!”

Trio of Sweets

The Garden Slug scored itself a cool event on Thursday.. Mr Oscar Arias Sanchez, the president of Costa Rica was in Singapore to conduct some trade talks and we were tasked to create a healthy lunch for him and EDB.

We par-cooked the courses at the slug kitchen, and finished the cooking/ plating at the EDB kitchen.

This was the menu we prepared for Mr Sanchez:

1. Blended White Button mushrooms in organic Porcini stock, with warm panini and Pesto Pinenut oil by side

2. Chilled rocket and frizzy greens with grilled Chicken Breast, sweet cherry tomatoes and a drizzle of multigrain vinaigrette

3. Japanese Snow Cod baked with rosemary and olive oil on a bed of pureed roasted carrots and garlic. Served with hand-moulded Holland Potato Cake encrusted with fresh chopped parsley and soy bacon. pan-seared warm tri-coloured Antipasto completed the ensemble.

4. Trio of Sweets – signature Brownie Popsicle coated with semi-sweet french chocolate, Ripe Strawberry dipped in Exquiste white chocolate and dusted with hand-mortared pistachios & Shot Glass of Vanilla-infused Seaweed gelatin layered wth reduced oranges pulp and topped off with custard & Cinnamon sugar. A sweet crystaled cinnamon stick completes the look.

Unfortunately, we only managed to take a quick shot of the last course, Lunch was served at a breakneck pace as I think they had to go for another meeting after a quick meal…

The EDB folks were warm and they created a workable pantry for us to whip up lunch. Thank you to Hui Shi, Raymond & Felicia!

We’re glad that they enjoyed lunch and the butler service provided by our very smartly-decked out Joseph , Chris and Hans slugs. Starched white shirt + Black Tie = so M.I.B haha!

Right after that event, we rushed back to the shop to pick up another load of party food for the FSV 15 event ( Film-Sound-Vison 15th Annv) … And headed straight to Movida at St James Powerstation for a 250 guests party.

pseudo-"artistic" shots...

The shots were quite badly-lit…. sorry! We were in such a rush, really didn’t have much time to do much to the camera. We bumped into ex-slug Jonathan and we saw Pierre Png and his wife ( can’t remember her name! ooops) , they’re soooo THIN! Basicaly the event called for artsy food items with minimal eating fuss.. So we made some of our usual pretty food.. Strawberries… Brownies…. And also a special new item- industrial-looking ( Intentionally mass-produced look and feel) cups of Pasta Aglio Olio in identically-labeled plastic cups, served with chop sticks. – Installation Food Art, anyone?

Ok, gotta rush to the shop now, Michael slug needs a new frying pan!! And Tofu !! And Salt!!

More updates later! But not much Food pOrn, sorry. Hope you guys are not too disappointed!

Love all Serve all- doing our bit ~13 May 2008 ( or we fed an NMP!)

We’re so happy & proud to say that The Garden Slug was one of the sponsors of the recent charity gala screening of the movie “Wilde”. The event was put together by the good folks of Fridae.com ( hello Jim and Tiff!) in a bid to raise funds for a community project .Remember Indignation07? It’d be back again :-) We created a healthy and chirpy cocktail spread which went along nicely with the selection of wine.

Some very prominent opinion leaders were there as well, to lend their support to a worthy cause.. We saw Mr Siew Kum Hong, NMP ( who came with his very pretty fiance.. ) , Glenn Goei etc.. And I saw Mr Siew eating our food!! It’s surreal, man! Now The Garden Slug can lay claim that Yes- we have fed a member of parliament. hahahaha.

Melon with greek herbed feta and stuffed olive on a pick! Jon slug had so many of these, he lost count. Then again, he lost count of almost everything after his 3rd glass of chardonnay. hic* :-0

Green & Orange Veg sticks sitting in zesty multigrain vinaigrette / Sweet shrimps in a tangy lemon garlic glaze with Frizzy leaves

Norwegian smoked salmon on Pumpernickel, topped with lowfat cream cheese and fresh chives / Grilled German bratwurst sausage knobs topped with zucchini and fire-blistered cherry tomatoes. Check out the white trays in the background! Instead of serving the food on plates, we created some paper placemats with Oscar Wilde quotes and placed them on trays. For tongue-tied nerds, it worked in other ways too- it helped them to break the ice with potential cuties too. Nervous Nerd: “Erm, hi! Have you heard of the oscar wilde quote, ” blah …. ** cue: read from tray placemat** hehe >

And hey, what’s a party without some fabulous sweets right? Plump ripe Strawberries dipped in fine belgian white chocolate. A perfect foil to the “slim pickings” hehe.

All in all , it went well, Thank You everybody for your hard work! Shout outs to the slugs who made this happen..We look forward to getting more involved in being “good corporate citizens” . This year, we have sponsored the food for 2 photography exhibitions and easter snacks for a nearby church.. If you have any ideas on what we can do next, let us know! We’re always happy to get involved wherever we can. ( Disclaimer/s : unless your event falls on Joe’s chiro days/Sharon’s lion-dance practising days/Sophia’s online scrabble days/Michael’s trouser-ironing days/Deepa’s eyebrow plucking days/Jon’s American Idol days- we’re probably good to go)

Here’s what we did for them. Take a look at the pics below for the low-down on the menu items. Sharon slug & Joe slug, you’ve outdone yourselves again in the food styling~~ btw- I’m so relieved that my precious russian dolls came back alive, I was half expecting them to be drenched in soup. :-0

Ngee Ann Poly Dragon Boat Team

sweet kids, these

These kids were so organised, they actually queued up for the food line in BATCHES. They politely informed us whenever anything was running low. Gave us no trouble at all. How sweet is that!
And they were all an average age of 19!
peach mango mousse cake

Joe Slug spent a good part of the evening endlessly slicing peaches. The hungry dragon-boaters gobbled up more than 600 of these babies!

the spread for 80pax

Guess which was the first to go…

Anything with high-carb content of course. Potato wedges were the first to finish… then the Shepherd’s Pie… And of course, which hungry young person can resist Wasuga Wings…

stove-top tomatoes

Stove-top tomatoes. Didn’t rank too high on the popularity scale. Lesson learned. Just make more potato wedges next time! haha ;-)

Shepherd's Pasta Pie

Lovingly layered: Yukon Mash, Chicken Bolognese, Penne Rigate, Chicken Bolognese again, Yukon Mash again, finally smother generously with Mozzarella.

At the end of the evening, Adrian (tall, dark, muscular, very handsome!) and the organising team came up to us, shook our hands, thanked us for our hard work and apologised if they were a little rowdy. To which we replied, No worries, we do this all the time!

Ngee Ann Poly Dragon Boat Team. We really enjoyed having you at The Garden Slug, all 74 of you. We hope you enjoyed your celebratory dinner, too. You’re the sweetest bunch of students we’ve come across, ever! :-)

All the best for your future endeavours, and we hope to see you again soon.

Thank You David & Monica!

We’re so happy that you enjoyed your birthday party cum jamming session at The Garden Slug (David plays the bass — cool! ) It was an absolutely wondrous sight seeing our little joint transformed into dancehall of sorts. The best moment has got to be when David twirled his lovely missus, Monica on the dance floor. ( btw, Monica was in a very fetching outfit that night, you 2 make such a handsome couple)

Just look at our new slug mascot! We couldnt believe that David actually crafted our little slug for us from scratch.. We’re so touched by your thoughtful gift – It took David 2 whole days to mould and to fire his piece of art!  We’re going to frame up this precious baby in one of those 3D wooden/ glass boxes .. Can’t wait- it’d look absolutely gorgeous on our orange walls..

Once again, many happy returns and may all your birthday dreams come true! Here’s a toast to David & Monica, wishing you both health, love and peace :-)
