A female dog nurses her younglings, meanwhile the fleas are having a party

That would make a good opening line for a book we hope to write someday. In truth, when someone says “Flea Spree” that’s the imagery that gets conjured up. Or maybe it’s just me, I’m a weird old Slug.

Rest assured, neither canines nor their fleas will be present at The Garden Slug’s Flea Spree. We’ve professionally reserved the former and the latter for the vet and pet shops next door and next-next door…

ANYHOO.

Last couple of days to bundle up a sweet array of gifts for the first lady in your life.

We’ve got a plethora of unique, made-from-the-heart gifts for fleeing & spreeing:

• reusable, recyclable KeepCups

• organic soaps made by rose farmers in Bandung via sustainable living advocate Daughters of Tomorrow
• purses, hairpins and five-stone sets made by up & coming entrepreneurial young women in India, also by DoT
• canvas totebags – made of environmentally-friendly, unbleached canvas by Scook & Blessing Home
• wines from Sommerton
• ultra-soft comfort-fit t-shirts designed & manufactured by yours truly

Some proceeds of the Flea Spree will go towards building a sustainable living for underprivileged women, animal welfare, and support of the local arts. Because we want to be a business that gives back. Or at least we try to be lah, and we’d like to try even harder in the weeks, months and years to come.

Us Slugs huddled together and got our Mums greeting cards, some soap, some wine, and “wrapped” them up nicely in a practical li’l totebag. Think some of your Mums will like these heartfelt, heart-made gifts too? Tell us when you see us k! xx

Share Ur Meal … in 3 easy steps

There is nothing more exciting and more fun than a food-related project. Well, to us, at least.

shareURmeal Singapore is a community campaign from 22 – 28 August 2011 to raise awareness about the plight of low-income families in Singapore.

There is no donation involved on your end. So, what can we all do to help? Just take a photo (or two, or twenty!) of what you’re eating.

Very simply, here’s what happens ~~ for every photo you send in, the sponsor donates $3.00 to TOUCH Community Services.

That’s it.

No catch.

TOUCH then uses the sponsor’s donation for their food programme that targets needy & low-income families.

Indeed, it is easy as 1-2-3, yes?

1) Take a photo of any meal you’re having (doesn’t have to be a TGS meal!)

2) Send the photo to shareurmealsg@gmail.com

3) Tell others to do it too

“Like” shareURmeal’s Facebook Page to show some love & support, and to find out more about who you’ll be helping + the kind folk behind this super-awsum projekt.

We’re pretty sure we’d be able to meet, or even exceed, the targeted 1,600 food photos this year. GANBATTE KUDASAI!!

What Is Love

If you have just 9 minutes to spare today, watch this episode from The Street Times.

Favourite quote:

“In fact, you should love them more because they are being very honest with you.”

The Garden Slug + PinkDot

The Garden Slug supports the freedom to love

Every year we show our support for PinkDot by putting up a poster or two, blogging about it, and maybe sponsoring something or other.

This year, we are going to do something different. We are coming out, and we are making a statement.

The Garden Slug is closing shop today, a Saturday, to support The Freedom To Love by having the entire team attend PinkDot. Yes, all twenty of us will be there.

This. Is. BIG. Hokay? ‘Coz we never, never, never, never, ever close shop on a SATURDAY, yo.

We are proud to say that our team of Slugs comprises smart & passionate people from all walks of life, we welcome anyone as long as they’re willing to work hard. Same goes for the way we treat our customers – we don’t care whether you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or heterosexual. We welcome you without discrimination. (Oh, except when you have noisy, unruly children we really wish you’d go away. But ah well, even rude, ugly children shouldn’t be discriminated against. Here’s to democracy & having the freedom to breed.)

We’re also really excited about today because we are taking this opportunity to make this a team outing!

We have ourselves some awsum pink t-shirts
Pink t-shirts!

We printed and ironed-on the t-shirt artwork ourselves. Actually the printer ran out of ink, but we think it looks kinda trendy
Iron-ons!

We’re also sponsoring a Pink Drink for the event. The first 2,000 registrants will get our homemade sekret recipe Pink Drink HEHE, so come early!
Stickers!

We hope to see some if not all of you today too. Seriously, dude, it’s 2011. We reckon we no longer have to “fight” for acceptance, and that most Singaporeans are really cool about having lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and heterosexual family members. No seriously, a lot of you have straight friends & family and you sekretly (or openly) think they’re kinda weird and gross right? Listen to us – don’t be a**hole. Straight people were born that way, okay?

See you at Hong Lim Park today (Saturday, 18/6/2011) @ 5.00pm!
Come join us at Hong Lim Park, like, NAO

We are not a gay-friendly diner

(via)

… more like we operate a straight-friendly place.

We did say we are coming out this week, didn’t we? More on this soon.

Are you “foreign talent” too?

Picture 1The Garden Slug is proud to support TWC2 (Transient Workers Count Too) and HOME (Humanitarian Organization for Migration Economics).

Why? Because TGS itself is owned, operated & staffed by a healthy mixture of local & foreign talent. The cause is one that is very close to our hearts.

We all get along really well with each other here at TGS, regardless of our backgrounds. We have fun, we have our ups & down, we treat each other like family.

We are aware, however, not all foreigners have it so good.

Being a cosmopolitan migrant society, it is shameful that not many of our foreign worker friends are being treated right in Singapore.

twc-home

As part of our ongoing Commitment to Social Responsibility programme:
1) For TWC2, we translated their sixteen-page SMS helpline from English to Chinese.
TWC2 will also be doing up Tamil, Indonesian, Malay and Tagalog SMS helplines as soon as they trial run the effectiveness of the Chinese version.

2) We crafted & sponsored Brownie Popsicles for H.O.M.E.’s volunteer event (tomorrow!)

Do check out the TWC2 and HOME websites & give in whatever ways you can :)

Let’s not just tolerate, let’s embrace diversity.
